This project assesses the impact of several flood sources and the pressures of several additional challenges to the UK. This is conducted while raising the issues that need to be addressed and opportunities to resolve them. Using case studies in the report, these issues are addressed from an environmental, social and economic perspective.
Funded under DEFRA’s Making Space for Water initiative, this award winning project involved the development of three alternative design approaches to sustainable development in flood risk areas:
- living with water (incorporating flexible design so as to adapt to environmental changes)
- making space for water (designing around rivers and seas, allowing them to safely expand) and
- achieving zero carbon (by ensuring renewable energy sources such as tidal power are utilised)
